[Nintendo Switch] “Although the mechanism is the same, it’s incredibly forceful!! Is this a solution to the Switch 2’s capacity issue?”

Otaku Review Image

An adapter that converts M.2 SSD for Nintendo Switch 2 to MicroSD Express is under development. Nintendo microSD EXPRESS NINTENDO SWITCH M.2 NVMe 2230.

1: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:20Yeahx17

I only have 256GB, so it would be really appreciated if this could be done.

2: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:21Yeahx8

Aren’t you going to end up discarding mobile mode?

6: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:24

>>2Rather, it doesn’t go into the dock.

7: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:24Yeahx5

>>2Rather, the standby mode can’t be used.
It’s just like where you insert it on Switch 1, at the back part of the stand under the main unit.

3: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:21

Overflowing…

4: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:23Yeahx12

If you don’t carry it, you don’t need an expensive SD card.

5: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:23Yeahx1

It doesn’t seem like it will get that fast because the bottleneck hasn’t been resolved.

8: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:24

Isn’t it big?

9: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:25

There’s a reason why Nintendo didn’t adopt it, so I’m going to take a risk.

18: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:30

>>9Due to high power consumption and heat generation, it cannot be adopted in a dual-use as a mobile device for two reasons.
It will need to be dedicated for stationary use, but doing so will require considerable modifications to the dock itself.

10: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:25

The dock itself is quite sparse, so let’s cut it to make some space.

11: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:25

How do you use this…?

12: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:26Yeahx1

At least make it so that it can coexist with the dock.

13: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:26

This concealment is a lie.

14: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:27

It’s a prototype, right?

15: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:27

You have to open the stand to access the SD slot.
A dock means that you have to connect it with an extension cable from the upper port.
In that case, the cooling fan for the dock won’t work, so we need to cool the main unit with a separate cooling fan.

58: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:55

>>16Isn’t it unofficial news?

60: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:55Yeahx9

>>58Of course!

17: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:28

Since the demand for the Switch 2 will increase from now on, if you wait, it will gradually become cheaper…

19: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:32

With the PS5, there’s enough room for cooling mechanisms and power supply, but it’s impossible with the size of the Switch.

20: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:32Yeahx2

The road seems to be stretching out.

21: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:33

We need a dock that lays down instead of standing up.
Or should we add one more terminal to the dock?

22: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:33Yeahx7

It’s cheaper in terms of capacity per unit than microSD Express, but 2230 isn’t as cheap as I expected.

23: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:34Yeahx1

Isn’t it true that a dedicated dock also needs to be designed separately?

24: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:34

Well, that’s a defective product…

25: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:35

Rather, I want the opposite.
If you can’t read and write quickly on a PC at a low cost, it becomes difficult to transfer data when increasing capacity.

26: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:36

It seems faster to modify the main unit for stationary use.

27: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:37Yeahx2

It’s not about the merits and demerits; it’s about doing it because you want to.

28: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:38Yeahx1

I want things like SD cards and external storage to be available for smartphones as well.
It’s not good that prices can be increased as much as they want based on the amount of internal storage.

29: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:40

Is it okay for the fanless M.2 with no airflow to handle heat?

39: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:46

>>29Somehow with the heat sink.

30: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:42

I can’t use the dock, but I can use it in handheld mode, right?

31: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:43

It has a slightly interesting shape.

32: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:44

If I make the SSD joint into an L shape and break part of the back of the dock, can it stand up…?

33: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:44

If it’s designed to bend like this, it can stick neatly to the back of the main unit without any issues, right?

41: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:46Yeahx1

>>33I remember this from the PSP era.

34: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:44

If it interferes with the genuine dock, I think they might also be developing a dock specifically for this adapter.

35: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:45

By the time it goes on general sale, it seems that 1TB SD cards will be very cheap.

44: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:49

>>35It’s around 50,000 at the current price.
It seems like it will drop significantly once it ripens.

36: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:45

After playing at the secret exhibition, make it… this is crazy.

38: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:46

>>36I watched a video over 6 hours long from a certain streamer and I’m satisfied, so I guess that’s good…

43: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:47

>>38I was satisfied too, but looking at the heat dissipation airflow and the heat sink method, this is not good.

51: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:52

>>38The decomposition video is the one from the secret exhibition! It turned out to be something like a Shinken Seminar, and it was no good.

37: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:45

Well, if someone is going to use something like this, they’re mostly likely in console mode, so they’ll probably come up with some kind of trick.

40: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:46

It will definitely get quite hot.
It seems convenient in winter.
In summer…

87: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:07

>>40I’ll attach a fan to TypeC.

42: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:47Yeahx2

(Crack)

45: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:49

I think it probably needs a power supply to operate, doesn’t it?

46: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:50

A once-only SD card sold with the console directly by Nintendo?

47: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:51

Since it’s just a direct extension of PCIe, it should be fine if I extend it, but… I wonder if there will be any issues with noise.

48: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:51

Killing the portability and TV mode, which are the good points of the Switch, is unnecessary.
I’m curious how they will address that in future updates.
I don’t want to use it, but…

52: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:53

>>48As for storage, wouldn’t it be a matter of releasing high-capacity SD cards or a version that has increased capacity due to a model change?

49: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:52

Doesn’t it feel like the cover might poke out a bit more?

50: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:52

If it looks awkward, you can just put the Packun Flower’s shell over it.

53: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:53

Can it be done by forcefully stretching the ribbon cable?

54: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:53

There’s nothing you can do about storage with the update, right?

61: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:55Yeahx1

>>54It’s probably a hardware update for the thread graphics or the dock, right?

55: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:54Yeahx3

Well, the unofficial dog will probably come out eventually…

56: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:54

The increase in storage from the main unit upgrade may be something that Nintendo officially releases.

57: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:54Yeahx1

It seems like it might become a vulnerability.

59: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:55

I don’t really have trouble with storage up to that point… I can just delete games I don’t play.
I might not know about 20 years later.

62: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:56

Fleek is a bit scary.
But if it’s done as a stationary setup, is that acceptable?

63: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:56

It’s pretty much a given that a high-end model using OLED will be released, and the internal storage might increase around that time.
It might not increase.

67: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:57

>>63How much will it be…?

74: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:02

>>63Secret Exhibition “We Did Not Use Organic EL to Display Brightly!”

64: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:56

Isn’t it a ribbon cable?

65: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:56Yeahx2

You’re just going to be blocked by the firmware anyway.

66: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:56

It seems that a dedicated dock will be made.

68: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:57Yeahx3

Even though it’s a weird news site, I feel like it’s risky to put logos on unofficial and unlicensed items.

69: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:57

There is a possibility that it might be solved with software.
It seems that some kind of innovative data compression method will be invented.

70: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:58Yeahx4

It is better for more companies to create SDEX for the demand of Switch2 than to think of various alternatives.

76: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:03

>>70The lowest price for 256GB is the amazing reality of Nintendo Online.

71: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:59Yeahx1

Since there’s no software to install, it won’t increase that easily.

72: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)19:59Yeahx1

If SanDisk or Samsung quickly releases a 1TB option and it becomes part of the sales target for my tendow, that would pretty much solve everything.

73: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:00

I thought for a moment that it was convenient because our Switch is always attached to the bed’s arm.
I feel like there’s no way to avoid getting all hot.

75: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:03

Doesn’t microSD Express get hot?
I haven’t properly researched it, but is that speed not exaggerated?

81: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:05

>>75I think it’s a secret exhibition that makes you realize companies without technology can’t create it because it gets really hot.

82: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:05

>>75You need to properly prevent heat dissipation with copper sheets and graphene sheets when implementing the slot.

83: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:06

>>82If I keep it stored in a stuffy place like a dock and use it stationary, it might get damaged.

96: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:12Yeahx1

>>75Since it is equivalent to PCIe 3.0 (gen3) x1, the transfer speed won’t be that high (compared to desktop PCs).

77: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:03

Whether or not the secret exhibition is happening shows a difference in knowledge.

80: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:05

>>77I can’t do anything without having the Switch 2 in hand first…

78: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:03

Even if a flexible type comes out, I don’t want to expose the M.2 SSD and stick it on…

79: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:04

It doesn’t dock, and in handheld mode, it’s annoying and flops around.
Can something like this sell?

84: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:06

The decomposition video seems to be at a level that could be recognized as similar to the gameplay videos of the secret exhibition, which is amazing.

85: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:06

This is a problem that goes beyond the secret exhibition.

86: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:07

Is Nintendo making something like this?

88: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:08

>>86Of course, I won’t make it.

89: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:08

If it can be attached to the dock, then that’s fine, but directly on the handheld device, there’s just something about it…

90: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:09

It should still be able to go up to 5W of power consumption at 2230, so it depends on where to draw the power from.

91: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:09

It’s not that fast on SDex, right?

94: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:11

>>91Because it’s 10 times, it’s completely different from normal SD.

95: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:12

>>91Samsung has done a great job.

97: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:13

>>91Structurally, an M.2 SSD is just in the shape of a microSD, so if you think M.2 is not particularly fast, then it’s not fast.

92: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:09

If it can be fixed together with the main unit like an expansion dock, then it might be usable somehow, but…

93: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:10

In the end, Vita’s official memory card of 64GB wasn’t enough, so they made a MicroSD adapter like the one in the thread image.
It should recognize up to 256GB.

99: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:14

>>93The Vita memory card adapter was stuck on a communication analysis board and was being hacked to convert game cards into storage.

107: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:19

>>99I just looked it up and found out that the game card side is an SD adapter.
I see, then I won’t have to do something like in the thread image.

104: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:16

>>93If I don’t need CFW, I want it.

98: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:14Yeahx1

It’s a product that’s very much like Nintendo.

100: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:14Yeahx1

The secret exhibition properly explains how fast it has become and that the heat is also crazy.

101: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:14

In other words, even so, the heat can get incredibly high with a console, so it’s amazing that people are still using it as a console.
The recent inflation of transfer speeds and heat generation due to the formulation of PCIe standards and corresponding adaptations is quite remarkable.

102: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:15

Since a handheld-focused Lite version of Switch 2 will come out anyway, I feel like this is fine.

103: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:15

What I want you to try in the thread is whether the transfer speed will double with PCIEGen4.
The Tegra Orin, which is the chip for Switch, supports PCIe Gen 4, so it may be compliant with the SD 8.0 standard.

105: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:18

I can’t use it unless you make it compatible with this dock.

106: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:19

They are particular about using SD so that even children can use it.
Kids these days can probably handle SSDs.

108: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:19

>>106Can you carry the main unit with this attached?

109: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:20Yeahx1

>>106It says power consumption is a problem point, doesn’t it?

114: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:22

>>109Is around 5W a problem?

117: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:23

>>1145W is exactly the TDP of the SoC for smartphones.
It’s seriously crazy in the mobile world to carry everything with almost the same power storage that an iPhone and others are fully utilizing.

118: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:24

>>114Yes
Based on the battery capacity and operating time, it seems that with just the SoC, it operates at a level of 6-7W.
By the way, if you put an M.2 in the early model SteamDeck, the operating time decreases significantly.

110: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:20

>>106Well, anyone can do it if it’s just about stabbing and connecting.

115: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:22

>>106That’s not what I meant!

111: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:20

When considering storage that anyone can handle, SDex is a reasonable choice.

112: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:21

The 6-hour video of the secret exhibition really shows how painfully kind the comments are.

116: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:22

>>112Is it because it’s broken down to a level that even children can understand?

113: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:21

Anyway, MicroSD has a power consumption on the order of milliwatts according to the specifications.
Lower compared to the 2230 SSD.

119: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:24

It seems like people are saying the battery life isn’t good at the moment…

123: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:26

>>119Amazing processing power = Amazing power consumption…

127: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:28

>>119It’s not good, or rather, it only has 20Wh.
The initial model of SteamDeck is half of it, and RogAllyX is one-fourth.
But thanks to that, it has become much lighter.

120: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:25

I want the official side to enable storage on the dock.
I was planning to do it on the Switch.

121: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:25

The battery life is terrible and the heat is crazy.
It’s hard to say that it’s a success just because it’s energy-saving!

122: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:25

The good thing about microSD is that it’s small.
There is no room for adopting other storage options for the Switch 2, which has size limitations as a portable device.

124: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:27

You might say Rog Ally uses M.2, but…
That lasts only 2 hours with 80Wh.

125: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:27Yeahx5

>>124Switch2 also takes about 2 or 3 hours, so it doesn’t really change anything.

131: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:30

>>125Switch2 is 20Wh.
Assuming the total system uses 10W, the battery capacity that can last for 2 hours.

126: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:28

Batteries can only increase capacity by increasing their volume now…
Unless some kind of technological paradigm shift occurs, there’s nothing that can be done.

128: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:29

If the distance for wireless charging reaches 10 meters, it would solve the problem of being far from the dock.

133: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:30

>>128Hmm hmm
Can’t the liberal arts just pay the money and keep quiet?

129: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:29

All companies are working hard to ensure that the battery life of mobile devices doesn’t fall into a negative direction.

130: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:29

Being small also makes it disadvantageous for heat dissipation.

132: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:30

Well then, shall we go with a console?

134: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:31

We have no choice but to continue relying on 3.7V lithium-ion batteries, which are on the brink of balancing safety and capacity, until truly groundbreaking materials are found.

135: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:32

An 80Wh battery capacity is enough to run the Wii U console for about 2 hours.

136: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:32

Rather, if we eliminate the battery and make it AC only, it would be lightweight and could be played for a long time, which would be good.

137: Japan Otaku Reviews25/06/11(Wed)20:32

20Wh = 5405.405mAh is not much different from a smartphone with a slightly larger battery.
Considering the stored capacity, it’s doing its best to last for just 3 hours.
Even if shrinkage progresses and it becomes somewhat more energy-efficient, it will still be about 4 hours.
